Euroanaesthesia 2010
Euroanaesthesia 2010 in Helsinki, Finland, opened its door on 12 June with a plenary lecture given by Prof. Jennifer M Hunter entitled You'll never walk alone. Professor Hunter was introduced to a full auditorium by ESA President Prof. Paolo Pelosi.
Throughout the day the registration area was very busy to cater for the 5,000 registered delegates all wanting to access the Saturday sessions and attend the sixth annual meeting of the European Society of Anaesthesiology.
After a full day of refresher courses and hands-on workshop the delegates joined the ESA Board for the Opening Ceremony where the Helsinki Declaration on Patient Safety in Anaesthesiology was sigened in cooperation with the European Board of Anaesthesiology and UEMS. The ceremony ended with a dynamic performance by the YL Male Voice Choir
Sunday 13 June was the first full congress day and delegates arrived early to attend sessions on hot topics in anaesthesia, critical care medicine, emergency medicine and pain medicine. Other sessions touched changes in the profession as intensive care now often is part of the residency programmes but also the increasing importance of women. The role of National Societies of Anaesthesiologist and quality assurance in the management of postoperative pain were also subjects touched during the congress.
In the trade exhibition delegates enjoyed learning more about the latest products available from the 100 exhibitors taking part in the exhibition. At the ESA stand delegates signed up to benefit from the membership advantages, inquired about the European Diploma in Anaesthesiology and Intensive Care Medicine, learnt about e-learning and picked up brochures from Euroanaesthesia 2011 in Amsterdam. Many delegates were also curious to visit the National Societies Village and the Museum of Anaesthesia.
During Monday's General Assembly it was decided that non-physician registered health professionals and also medical students will be able to join ESA as members. The new membership will be applicable for the calendar year 2011.
Tuesday 15 June was the last day of the congress with a few sessions still running in the morning touching on a wide aspect of subjects. At 12.15 Euroanaesthesia closed its doors for this year but the planning has already begun for next year's congress in Amsterdam, the Netherlands.
In total, throughout the four congress days, close to 5,100 delegates visited Euroanaesthesia 2010 in Helsinki. The European Society of Anaesthesiology would like to thank delegates, faculty, exhibitors and everyone who participated to make the congress successful.
